Schalke coach Christian Gross confirms Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will travel to Bremen

For the first time since his return to Schalke 04, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will be in the squad when 'The Royal Blues' face Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will be part of Schalke 04's squad for their away trip to Werder Bremen on Saturday after returning to training following a calf injury.

The 37-year-old is expected to come on for his first Bundesliga appearance since his return to his former club from Ajax earlier this month.

"I'm happy to report that Klaas-Jan will travel to Bremen. We are planning to give him a cameo," Schalke 04 coach Christian Gross told reporters at the pre-match press conference.

Sitting next to his coach, Huntelaar commented:

"I'm always excited to play. I suffered a minor calf injury in my final game for Ajax, but I'm happy to be back in team training. I've been able to complete parts so far."

"Obviously I want to get back on the pitch as soon as possible, but you have to give the injury chance to heal. Otherwise you'll have problems for weeks and it might not go away," he added.

Gross also said he could imagine using Huntelaar alongside teenage striker Matthew Hoppe, who has scored five goals in his last four league appearances.

"I'm not ruling out Hoppe and Huntelaar playing up front together. It depends on the situation. Klaas-Jan would then play further forward in this partnership."
