DFL approves use of five subs through end of 2021/22
In another important decision resulting from Wednesday's executive meeting of the 36 clubs in Germany's top two footballing flights, it was confirmed that five-substitutions per match will again be permitted next season.
In a move largely expected by football watchers across the Bundesrepublik, the five-substitute-allowance also received approval for the entirety of the 2021/22 campaign. Full use of the allowance shall once again be permitted for all 36 clubs contested the first and second tier Bundesligas through the entirety of the season.
Unlike last year, the measure passed without any notable opposition. The International Football Association Board (IAFB) has given the full green light for all national FAs to extend the use of the five-sub-allowance this year, leaving the ultimate decision up to the domestic leagues themselves.
As of yet, there is no official confirmation that Germany's 3. Bundesliga will also approve the extension of the allowance. The DFB still governs decisions made regarding the country's third footballing flight. It can nevertheless be tacitly assumed that it shall be approved.
The DFB initially declined to allow five-subs to be used in the third tier during the first half of last season, but then reversed course at the campaign's halfway point.
