Confirmed: Schubert joins Eredivisie club after Schalke release
FC Schalke 04 confirmed the departure of Markus Schubert late Wednesday evening. The 23-year-old leaves Gelsenkirchen on a free.
The S04 administrative arm confirmed reports surfacing earlier in the day concerning keeper Markus Schubert's move to Eredivisie side SBV Vitesse. Schalke pockets no money from the transfer despite the fact that Schubert had a contract valid through 2023. Evidently, the contract was dissolved.
"We would have not been able to offer Markus playing time in line with our current mutual needs," Schalke sporting director Rouven Schröder noted in a released statement, "Therefore, a change was deemed the best solution from the sporting and financial perspective of all parties. We wish Markus all the best in his future professional and private endeavors."
In Arnhem, the Freiburg native is expected to serve as the new number one between the posts. Schubert made no appearances on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt this past season. Despite carrying the #1 tricot at the recent UEFA European U21 Championships, Stefan Kuntz opted to use Finn Dahmen of FSV Mainz 05 over Schubert as his first-choice keeper.
