Following a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and a 0-1 defeat to Greece, Germany finally secured their first win with Jürgen Klopp as head coach, seeing off Serbia 2-0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Thursday.
Asked what he liked most in a post-match interview, Klopp responded:
“Everything! The opening stages, the middle part, the ending.”
The 59-year-old was proud of the way his team played – both with and without the ball.
“The positioning in the box was incredible. To have that courage and know that we can allow ourselves to be cheeky and take risks if we win the ball back together. Everyone was there in our pressing moments. The last line defended really well by pushing up,” Klopp said.
“Without the ball, it was outstanding, and with the ball, we played wonderful football. That has to be our baseline. Whether we can always manage that remains to be seen. This game will go into my archive. The next step in our development. We are learning. Learning under pressure.”
Germany will look to avenge their 0-1 defeat to Greece when they face the Group A2 leaders in the reverse fixture in Thessaloniki on Sunday.
