2. Bundesliga: Grodowski grabs a brace as Arminia down Braunschweig

Arminia Bielefeld returned to winning ways in the 2. Bundesliga with a 3-1 victory over Eintracht Braunschweig at the SchücoArena on Friday evening, as Joel Grodowski scored twice to help the hosts secure an important three points.

Oliver Kirch’s side responded positively to last weekend’s defeat against Hertha BSC, producing an impressive attacking display to overcome a Braunschweig side that arrived in Bielefeld full of confidence following their 2-0 Niedersachsen derby victory over Hannover 96.

The hosts started brightly and immediately looked to put their opponents under pressure. Monju Momuluh provided an early attacking outlet down the right, driving towards the byline before pulling the ball back into the penalty area. Grodowski’s attempted finish was blocked by Andi Hoti, while Leon Jensen’s subsequent effort from the edge of the box was also kept out by the visiting defence.

Braunschweig attempted to respond through Aaron Opoku, who made progress down the flank following a turnover in possession. However, Maximilian Großer intervened to win an important challenge and bring the visitors’ promising attack to an end.

Bielefeld gradually began to take control of proceedings, with their pressing game causing significant problems for Lars Kornetka’s side. Jannik Rochelt came particularly close to opening the scoring after a high turnover, but the winger took too long to get his shot away, allowing Florian Flick to recover and block the attempt.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 23rd minute. Following a corner, Bielefeld kept the pressure on the Braunschweig defence, with Maximilian Großer finding the net to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Just four minutes later, Arminia doubled their advantage through an outstanding piece of attacking football. Braunschweig once again surrendered possession before the halfway line, allowing Bielefeld to launch another dangerous move.

Marius Wörl combined with Arne Sicker, who played a first-time pass into Rochelt’s path down the left. The winger delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where Grodowski demonstrated superb control, bringing the ball down with his knee and chest before sending a defender the wrong way and calmly finishing from close range.

Braunschweig’s afternoon became increasingly difficult shortly afterwards when Junior Zé and Flick suffered a nasty collision of heads, forcing a brief stoppage as both players received treatment. Flick eventually returned to the pitch with his head heavily bandaged.

The visitors struggled to find a response before the interval, with Bielefeld continuing to look the more dangerous side. Indeed, Braunschweig had failed to register a shot on target by the 42nd minute, underlining the hosts’ dominance during the opening period.

Following the restart, Braunschweig showed greater attacking intent and managed to find a route back into the contest through Aaron Opoku, who reduced the deficit to 2-1 and gave the visitors renewed hope of taking something from the game.

However, Bielefeld responded by restoring their two-goal advantage, with Grodowski finding the net for a second time to complete his brace and make it 3-1. The forward’s clinical finishing ensured that Braunschweig’s brief comeback was brought to an end.

The hosts subsequently saw out the remainder of the contest to secure an important home victory and bounce back from their disappointment in Berlin.

The result represents a positive response from Kirch’s side, while Braunschweig will be disappointed with their performance after failing to build on the momentum generated by last weekend’s derby success.
