With the stakes high at opposite ends of the table, Saturday’s clash promises to be an intriguing encounter as Florian Kohfeldt’s Darmstadt take on Tim Walter’s newly revitalised Holstein Kiel side.
Darmstadt have enjoyed a strong campaign under Kohfeldt, spending much of the season inside the top three and firmly in the mix for promotion back to the Bundesliga. Die Lilien currently sit third in the table on 45 points, just two behind leaders Schalke.
However, their impressive momentum was halted last weekend with a 3-1 defeat away to Dynamo Dresden, ending a remarkable 14-game unbeaten run in the league. Patric Pfeiffer’s first-half red card proved to be a decisive moment, and although Dresden were also reduced to 10 men shortly after the break, Darmstadt were unable to capitalise. Vincent Vermeij struck twice in stoppage time to seal the win for the hosts.
Such is the unforgiving nature of the 2. Bundesliga that Darmstadt’s first defeat in months saw them slip down to third place in the standings.
Kohfeldt’s side will look to bounce back quickly on home soil, where they have been extremely difficult to beat this season. Darmstadt remain unbeaten in their 12 league matches at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor.
Kiel, meanwhile, find themselves in serious trouble. A winless run of six matches has dragged them deep into the relegation battle, prompting a managerial change as Marcel Rapp made way for Tim Walter to begin his second spell in charge of the club.
The Storks sit 15th heading into the weekend, level on points with the relegation play-off spot and just two clear of the automatic drop zone.
Walter did manage to halt a run of four straight defeats in his first match back in charge, earning a respectable 1-1 draw at home to promotion-chasing Elversberg. David Mokwa gave the visitors the lead on the hour mark before Jonas Therkelsen responded just minutes later. The performance hinted at renewed belief and resilience under the new coach, providing a platform to build on ahead of another difficult test this weekend.
Improving their away form will be crucial if Kiel are to create breathing room above the relegation places. The Storks are winless in their last nine away matches, with their last victory on the road coming in Gelsenkirchen back in September.
H-2-H record
The reverse fixture between the sides ended in a 1-1 draw in October, with goals from Isac Lidberg and David Zec ensuring the points were shared. Kiel have not won a competitive match in Darmstadt since 2014, although Florian Kohfeldt is still searching for his first victory against the visitors after three previous meetings.
