Borussia Dortmund have sacked Nuri Sahin as head coach after a disappointing start to 2025.

The decision has been taken after Tuesday's 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League.

"We have a high regard for Nuri Sahin and his work. We wanted to work together for a long time and hoped until the very end that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together," said Borussia Dortmund's managing director for sport, Lars Ricken.

“However, after four defeats in a row, only one win in the last nine games and currently tenth in the Bundesliga, we have unfortunately lost faith in our ability to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation. This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”

Sahin, who took over from Edin Terzic last summer, said:

“Unfortunately, we have not been able to fulfil Borussia Dortmund's sporting ambitions at this stage of the season. I wish this special club all the best.”

Borussia Dortmund will announce who will lead the team in Saturday's Bundesliga clash with SV Werder Bremen as soon as possible.
