Hoeneß apologises to Max Eberl and gives major contract update

Uli Hoeneß has revealed that he regrets publicly discussing Max Eberl's contract situation before Bayern Munich's DFB-Pokal final, admitting his comments came at the wrong time.

Speaking to Sport1, the Bayern honorary president reflected on his previous statement, in which he had put Eberl's chances of receiving a new contract at "60-40."

"First of all, I have to say that I was incredibly annoyed with myself. That was naive. I thought the statements would be published the following week, but they were already made public on Saturday morning."

Hoeneß acknowledged that the timing of his remarks put unnecessary pressure on Bayern's sporting director ahead of one of the club's biggest matches of the season.

"That meant Max wasn't treated well by me before the Pokal match. I apologised to him."

Asked whether his assessment of Eberl's contract situation had changed, Hoeneß left no room for doubt.

"At the moment, I think 100%."

The comments are the clearest indication yet that Bayern's hierarchy expects Eberl to remain at the club, with a contract extension now appearing to be only a matter of time.
