After Liverpool were linked with a move for Mainz midfielder Kaishu Sano by Japanese outlet Nikkan Sports towards the end of last month, Sport Bild are now also reporting on the interest.

An article in Wednesday’s edition of the German magazine states that Sano is expected to leave Mainz this summer and that Liverpool are willing to pay €60 million for the defensive midfielder.

Such a deal would make Sano by far the most expensive departure in Mainz’s history, with the current record held by Brajan Gruda, who was sold to Brighton & Hove Albion for €31.5 million in 2024.

Sano’s market value was estimated at €40 million by Transfermarkt in May and has since risen further following his impressive performances for Japan at the World Cup.

Mainz paid just €2.5 million to sign the midfielder from Kashima Antlers in 2024.
