After struggling for form at West Ham United and during his loan spell at AC Milan, Niclas Füllkrug has impressed since returning to Werder Bremen last summer.
Having scored a brace against Paderborn at the weekend, the 33-year-old West Ham loanee now sits joint-top of the Bundesliga scoring charts with six goals, alongside Bayer Leverkusen's Patrik Schick.
According to Germany legend Lothar Matthäus, it's therefore only natural that Füllkrug is once again being discussed as a potential option for the German national team.
“Füllkrug feels comfortable in Bremen, and it shows. At West Ham and Milan, he did not feel the warmth, affection and trust that he receives at Werder,” Matthäus wrote in a column for Sky Germany.
At 33, Matthäus believes the forward could add valuable experience to Jürgen Klopp's young Germany squad.
“The numbers speak for him, even if he is getting on in years. Jürgen Klopp wants to rejuvenate the national team, but the younger players are still too inconsistent in their performances,” Matthäus continued.
“Having an experienced option like Füllkrug coming off the bench would give me confidence. However, the final decision rests with the national team coach.”
Füllkrug has scored 14 goals in 24 appearances for Germany. His last international outing came in June 2025.
Germany will play their next game against Serbia in the UEFA Nations League on November 13.
