Borussia Dortmund announced the sacking of Nuri Sahin as head coach on Wednesday, with U-19 coach Mike Tullberg taking over on an interim basis while a successor is sought.

According to Bild, Niko Kovac is in pole position to take over from Sahin, with contact reportedly having been made between the former Bayern Munich coach and Borussia Dortmund.

However, it's unclear whether Kovac is prepared to take the job. According to the report, Dortmund want to give the 53-year-old the reins until the end of the season and then decide whether to offer him a longer contract.

Kovac was last in charge of Wolfsburg, who sacked him in March 2024. He's also been the head coach of Monaco, Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt and Croatia.
