FC Barcelona's Ivan Rakitic played for Schalke 04 from 2007 to 2011 - and he doesn't want to rule out a return to the Bundesliga.

"For me, the Bundesliga has always been very special. I always followed it as a little boy and later played there for more than three years. My time in Schalke was special. We'll have to see if I return. It has to be suitable for all sides," he said in an interview with Spox and Goal.com.

Rakitic knows Manuel Neuer from their mutual time at Schalke, and he jokingly says he trusts the Bayern München keeper to give him a call if the possibility of a return to Germany arises.

"I still see the Bundesliga as one of the absolute top leagues. Bayern, Dortmund and Schalke are all top teams after all. 'Manu' will call me if the opportunity comes," Rakitic said.

Rakitic, 30, played 135 games for Schalke 04 before he joined Sevilla in January 2011. He was signed by FC Barcelona in the summer of 2014.
