With Marc-André ter Stegen still out with a long-term injury, Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann will be in goal when Germany face Italy in the UEFA Nations League.

The 34-year-old will start after prevailing in a tight battle with Alexander Nübel.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann addressed the decision at a press conference ahead of Thursday's first leg, saying:

"Alex handled the decision very professionally, which I found very, very positive. In the end, it came down to the last millimetre. It wasn't very clear, but we had to make a decision.

“Both are having a good season, both are at a good, consistent level. Oli is a bit more consistent at this level. We told both of them that it's for these two games because we also have a top goalkeeper in Marc and then we'll make a new decision after these games.”

Baumann has made two appearances for Germany in the past.
