Nagelsmann has a big task ahead of him, having replaced Hansi Flick after a poor run of form on contract until the end of next year's European Championship in Germany.
The 36-year-old is expected to make a number of changes from his predecessor, including a switch of system, having tested a 4-2-2-2 formation in training this week.
Marc-André ter Stegen will be in goal once again, with Manuel Neuer still working his way back to full fitness in Munich.
With Benjamin Henrichs injured, either Niklas Süle or Malick Thiaw could start on the right side of defense, with Robin Gosens and David Raum battling it out on the opposite side of the pitch.
Antonio Rüdiger is likely to start at the heart of defense, with the experienced Mats Hummels, recalled by Nagelsmann, and Jonathan Tah competing to play alongside him.
Joshua Kimmich is expected to miss out with a cold, with Leon Goretzka likely to partner Ilkay Gündogan in central midfield in his absence.
Prodigies Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz could start in attacking midfield roles behind target man Niclas Füllkrug and the in-form Leroy Sané.
Germany's most notable absentees, aside from Neuer and Henrichs, are Christian Günter and Serge Gnabry.
For the United States, former RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams will miss the game with a hamstring injury. Malik Tillman, on loan at PSV from Bayern, and Mark McKenzie are also out.
