Both Mundo Deportivo and Sport report that a decision on the need for surgery will be made based on further tests today, Monday.
Ter Stegen has missed three consecutive games for Barcelona and Germany's international matches over the past month as a result of the injury.
It's unclear how long the 31-year-old will be out for should he need surgery, but German media are speculating that his participation in the Euros next summer could be in jeopardy.
Ter Stegen will be under pressure from Manuel Neuer, who recently returned from a long spell on the sidelines, to keep his place in the German goal.
Reports suggest that Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann is planning to recall the 37-year-old Neuer for the matches against the Netherlands and France in March.
