Anton, who is likely to leave Hannover 96 following the club's relegation from the Bundesliga, would be available for around €10 million, according to the report.
The centre-back has also been linked with the likes of Hertha BSC, Werder Bremen, FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt. At Schalke, the 22-year-old would be reunited with his former teammate Salif Sané.
'The Royal Blues' are also being linked with Danish internationals Jonas Lössl and Mathias 'Zanka' Jørgensen who both play for Huddersfield Town - the former employer of the new Schalke coach, David Wagner.
Lössl - a former Mainz goalkeeper - will be available on a free transfer when his contract runs out this summer. The 30-year-old has made it clear that he's looking for a new club following Huddersfield's relegation from the Premier League.
'Zanka', 29, played regularly under Wagner, but the centre-back has slipped down the pecking order after Jan Siewert took over the job as manager in January. His contract runs until 2020.
