Following Germany's 0-1 defeat to Mexico, we have rated the performances of the German players, who were on the pitch, on a scale from 1 to 5. 1 is the worst grade while 5 is the best.

Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer - 3
Made a couple of saves and could hardly be faulted for the goal. Looked confident and came out of his goal to assist his defense a few times.

Right-back: Joshua Kimmich - 1,5
The right-back was actually among Germany's most dangerous offensive outlets, but his offensive attitude left Germany very exposed on counter-attacks through the Mexican left side.

Centre-back: Jerome Boateng - 3
Stopped Lozano from giving Mexico the lead early on with an important block and used his physicality well in the duels with the quick Mexicans.

Centre-back: Mats Hummels - 2
Made several mistakes in the German build-up play and didn't position well in the build-up to the Mexican goal. Made a couple of vital interventions to stop the Mexican counter-attacks, though.

Left-back: Marvin Plattenhardt - 2
Made his World Cup debut as he replaced Jonas Hector in the line-up. The Hertha full-back never really took part in the offensive play, but looked fairly solid defensively.

Defensive midfielder: Toni Kroos - 2
Was shut down by the Mexicans in the centre of the pitch and never really made his mark on the game. The Real Madrid star did come close to an equaliser, though, with an outstanding free-kick in the first half, but his shot was pushed onto the crossbar by the Mexican keeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Defensive midfielder: Sami Khedira - 1,5
The experienced defensive midfielder looked very slow and clumsy on the ball and was often overrun by the quick Mexicans.

Right wing: Thomas Müller - 1,5
Müller is known to be great at World Cup tournaments, but he certainly didn't have the best match yesterday. Didn't hit the target with a single shot and never really managed to combine with Germany's other offensive players.

Offensive midfielder: Mesut Özil - 1,5
Very quiet day for Mesut Özil who couldn't find the key to open up the Mexican defense.

Left wing: Julian Draxler - 1,5
The Paris Saint-Germain winger was trusted with a spot in the starting eleven, but didn't take advantage of the chance. Missed a few good opportunities in the second half.

Striker: Timo Werner - 1,5
Initially looked threatening and was found behind the Mexican defense a couple of times during the first half, but missed the opportunities that he had and eventually faded out until he was substituted towards the end.

Substitutes: Marco Reus (2,5), Mario Gomez (-), Julian Brandt (-)
