Lothar Matthäus: Hansi Flick is like a young Jupp Heynckes

Hansi Flick 'is like a young Jupp Heynckes', says Lothar Matthäus.

Lothar Matthäus sees a resemblance between Bayern München coach Hansi Flick and the club's former coach Jupp Heynckes who won the treble with the Bavarians in the 2012/13 season.

Matthäus is impressed with Flick's work since he took over the job in November and believes the 54-year-old is capable of coaching Bayern in the long run.

"If the success is there - and success doesn't just mean winning several titles - Bayern should let him stay on. He's like a young Jupp Heynckes. He both knows how to convince the players and make them laugh. That's important in Munich. It's also about the atmosphere," Matthäus told Kicker and added:

"You have to remember that it wasn't and isn't an easy situation for him. For example, Bayern have had to replace Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery and didn't get off to a good start. I trust Hansi to be Bayern's long-term coach."

Flick and Bayern face Hertha BSC in Berlin today.
