VfB Stuttgart full-back Borna Sosa will not be able to play for Germany despite acquiring German citizenship, according to Oliver Bierhoff.

The Germany boss has confirmed that the 23-year-old is not eligible to switch allegiance from Croatia due to FIFA regulations.

"Borna Sosa is an interesting player with great potential, and not just because of his performances in the current season. We could see him playing for the national team after completing his naturalization process," Bierhoff told DPA.

"That's why we have carefully and seriously examined his eligibility to play for Germany. Unfortunately, the result wasn't positive."

Sosa has made 26 appearances for Stuttgart this season, setting up 10 goals.
