Bundesliga at the Euros, Day 10
Group A concluded today but there was only one game where there were players from the Bundesliga that were involved. It was 1-0 in the Italy vs Wales game, however, the game had no Bundesliga involvements so this piece will be talking about Switzerland vs Turkey. Here is the report on the Swiss' win over a lacklustre Turkey.
UEFA Euro 2020 |
A superb Switzerland dispatched Turkey in front of a large Turkish support in the Olympic Stadium in Baku, leaving Turkey rock bottom of the group having lost all 3 games at this year's tournament. Switzerland started the game with 5 Bundesliga players in the starting XI, with 3 of the 5 playing their football at Borussia Mönchengladbach, namely Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi, and Breel Embolo. But it was Benfica and former Eintracht Frankfurt striker Haris Seferovic who gave Switzerland the lead after just 6 minutes with a fine strike from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.
Switzerland doubled their lead when Frankfurt's Steven Zuber supplied his second assist as a rocket from Xherdan Shaqiri found the top corner to make it 2-0 to the Swiss after 26 minutes. Turkey did very little to trouble the Swiss backline with Yann Sommer not needing to make a save in the first half.
Turkey finally scored their first goal of EURO 2020 when Istanbul Basaksehir midfielder Irfan Kahveci scored a wonderful goal from range which Sommer could not get near, but it was not to be for the Turks as minutes later Zuber grabbed his third assist of the game setting up Shaqiri for his 2nd goal and Switzerland's 3rd of the game.

Wales' 1-0 defeat against Italy was enough to see them through to the next round in 2nd place behind group winners Italy, Switzerland need to see how the other groups shape up to see if they are one of the best 3rd place teams.
