According to sources at Absolut Fussball, Groningen pushed intensively for Waldhof Mannheim's Lovis Bierschenk last summer.

The second and final offer from the Dutch club was €1.3million – a sum which could have increased significantly with bonuses.

However, sporting director Gerhard Zuber and coach Rui Mota rejected a sale, preferring to keep the talented 21-year-old.

Waldhof secretly dreams of gaining promotion to the second division and sees Bierschenk as a potential game-changer in the 3.Liga.

Those unfamiliar with Bierschenk may recall his time at Mainz in 2023, winning an U-19 German Championship against Borussia Dortmund.

Bierschenk, joined by Brajan Gruda and Nelson Weiper opened the scoring in the match, which was only decided 4-2 in extra time.

Since then, the now 21-year-old became the most expensive player in Waldhof Mannheim's club history, costing €400,000 last January.
