Come the final whistle in Munich this evening, the visitors' dugout and Daniel Bauer had to piece together what went wrong in their 8-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.

“The second half wasn't what we had envisioned – we have to apologize to our traveling fans for that,” said VfL Wolfsburg's head coach in the mixed zone.

"We lost too many challenges after the break and didn't support each other well enough defensively, and Bayern ruthlessly exploited that.

"Nevertheless, I'm taking some positives from the first half: We implemented many of the things we had planned.

“We need to build on that, quickly put the result behind us, and at the same time be critical of ourselves,” explained the 43-year-old.

The Lower Saxony club will have to dust themselves off quickly and regather before they host FC St. Pauli at 18:30 CET on Wednesday.
