Brown: “I'm proud of the team”

Nathaniel Brown expressed his pride after Germany produced a commanding display to sweep aside Curaçao 7-1 in Houston and make a perfect start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Germany appeared to be cruising after Felix Nmecha’s early opener, but Curaçao stunned the favourites with a surprise equaliser in the 21st minute. To their credit, Julian Nagelsmann’s side responded emphatically, regaining control of the contest before running riot to secure a comprehensive six-goal victory.

Among the standout performers was Brown, who marked his World Cup debut in memorable fashion. The 22-year-old full-back showed no signs of nerves on the biggest stage, contributing a goal and an assist in an outstanding all-round display.

Speaking after the match, Brown reflected on a dream debut and the team’s impressive response to adversity.

“It’s indescribable that I scored in my first World Cup match. We’re very pleased to have scored seven goals. The goal we conceded was unnecessary, but perhaps it did us good to wake us up. I’m proud of the team for simply carrying on and playing well. The goals are good for us, but we also need to keep working on our weaknesses.”

Brown’s performance will have done no harm to his chances of retaining his place in the starting lineup, and he will be eager to build on his impressive World Cup debut when Germany face Ivory Coast on June 20.
