As the Berliner Kurier reports, center-back Linus Gechter could decide to leave Hertha BSC if they fail to gain promotion to the Bundesliga.

The key player's contract with the club only runs until next summer and in the current situation, there is limited room for financial concessions.

However, an extension with a manageable salary increase would only be conceivable should they return to the German topflight.

Until a final sporting decision is made, an early departure this winter is currently unlikely for the highly promising 22-year-old.

Ultimately, his role as a regular starter and the prospect of a possible return to the Bundesliga outweighs cashing in on Gechter for now.

There were several parties in the summer who had positioned themselves to sign Gechter, with VfL Wolfsburg monitoring him closely.

After relegation, the Lower Saxony club had to change their plans but managed to sign his then clubmate Fabian Reese instead.

Italian Serie A club Como 1907 then tried to sign the Berlin youth academy product in summer, however a deal didn't materialize.
