It was confirmed on Tuesday evening that Germany will face Denmark in the round of 16 at Euro 2024.

After a 0-0 draw with Serbia, the Danes finished with three points and second place in Group C, ahead of Slovenia and behind England.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Germany's sporting director, Rudi Völler, was asked what he thinks of the Danish team.

"I can tell you that we watched the game together yesterday," Völler said.

“They are a very physical, strong team. They're also good at set pieces. They sometimes struggle to create chances, but they are dangerous. Nevertheless, we are confident and have worked hard to be in this position.”

Former Hoffenheim, Werder Bremen and Gladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard made it clear after Tuesday's game that he's not afraid of facing the Germans, but rather looking forward to the match.

Asked about this, Völler said:

“What else should he say? If Switzerland had finished first, he would have said the same thing. Of course, Denmark are a good team and it will be a tough game. But our last two games have been tough as well, and if we can cut out a few mistakes, we'll make it to the quarter-finals.”

Völler doesn't have the best memories of facing Denmark at the Euros. After breaking his arm in the early stages of the 1992 tournament, he watched his teammates lose 2-0 to the Danes in the final.

"1992 was particularly bitter for me. I broke my arm in the first game and couldn't play. I was flown in for the final and wanted to be a good luck charm. But the Danes were simply good back then, it has to be said - and deserved to be European champions," the former German international recalled.
