Gündogan praises Barcelona teammate Yamal: "Extremely advanced for his age"

At just 16 years old, Lamine Yamal has played a key role for Spain at Euro 2024, notching up two assists on the way to the quarter-finals where they will now face Germany.

Ilkay Gündogan plays alongside the young winger at FC Barcelona and knows all about his quality.

“Lamine is extremely advanced for his age. The way he played last season was incomparable,” Gündogan said at a press conference on Thursday.

“When I look at where I was at 16... it shows that this new generation is taking on a lot of responsibility. He's a very important player for the Spanish national team - and for Barca in the years and decades to come,” added the Germany captain.

Gündogan was also asked about former Manchester City teammate Rodri and how to get him off balance.

“I remember when he came to Manchester. After training, he would sometimes talk to Pep for half an hour. He was just learning and perfecting his game. He's the best player in the world in that position. We won't be able to shut him down for 90 minutes.”
