Former Bayern München and Germany centre-back Holger Badstuber has hung up his boots at the age of 33.

"Dear fans... after 13 years of professional football, I announce the end of my career as an active player," Badstuber announced in a statement.

"With 31 senior games for Germany, with World Cup and European Championship participations, six German championships, four DFB Cup victories, winning the Champions League, the Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and three national Super Cups, I can look back on a successful time.

Badstuber, who suffered a number of serious injuries throughout his career, last played for FC Luzern, where his contract was terminated by mutual consent in December 2021.

"Of course, I would have wished for a few less serious injuries. But the joy about what I have achieved is very great. I am grateful for everything," stated the 33-year-old.
