Roger Schmidt has been linked with the job as head coach of Schalke 04, but the former Bayer Leverkusen coach says he intends to fulfill his contract with Chinese side Beijing Guoan which runs until the end of 2019.

"I've got a contract here in Beijing until the end of the year. I've promised the team and the club to fulfill it," Schmidt told Bild.

Schalke have been looking for a coach who can take over the job ahead of the 2019/20 season following the sacking of Domenico Tedesco in March. Huub Stevens has been given the responsibility on an interim basis until the end of the season.

According to Bild, Schmidt was Schalke's preferred candidate for the job with Bruno Labbadia and David Wagner being other possible options.

Red Bull Salzburg coach Marco Rose has also been linked with Schalke, but he's expected to replace Dieter Hecking at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
