Löw: I have an emotional bond with Müller, Hummels and Boateng

Germany coach Joachim Löw has lifted the lid on just how difficult it was for him to to end the international careers of Jerome Boateng, Thomas Müller and Mats Hummels who were all part of the squad that led 'Die Mannschaft' to World Cup glory in 2014.

Back in March, ahead of Germany's Euro 2020 qualification campaign, Löw travelled to Munich to inform the experienced trio that they were no longer part of his plans - and that certainly wasn't easy.

"It was a very difficult day. It cost me a lot of strength, because I have a very emotional bond with these three players," Löw said in an interview with Sportbuzzer and added:

"The World Cup title will always connect us."

Löw says 'different scenarios' were discussed at the time, but it was always clear to him that he wanted to keep some of the more experienced players in the squad.

"We wanted to create space for players that we trust to be the backbone of this team in the future. But it was just as clear to me that we would still need more experienced players. Neuer, Kroos, Reus and Gündogan play that role now," he told Sportbuzzer.

Löw and Germany face the Netherlands (September 6) and Northern Ireland (September 9) in their upcoming fixtures.
