Schalke captain Omar Mascarell feels 'in a good position' to earn Spain call-up

Omar Mascarell feels he has the qualifications to play for Spain.
Schalke 04's Omar Mascarell believes he has put himself in a good position to get called up for the Spanish national team for the first time.

The 26-year-old, who recently took over the captain's armband from Alex Nübel at Schalke, told t-online.de:

"If it should actually come to that, my biggest childhood dream would come true. In Spain, you grow up with the idea that you can only make it to the national team if you play for one of the big clubs - Real, Barca and - in recent years - Atlético. But I honestly think I'm in a good position.

"I'm playing regularly, I'm now even the captain of FC Schalke 04, one of the biggest clubs in Germany if not in Europe, I'm fit and in my best age as a footballer. So why not? I'm ready," Mascarell said.

Mascarell played for Spain at youth level. He's also eligible to play for Equatorial Guinea and was called up for their national team in 2012, but ultimately declined to play.
