Schalke 04 head coach David Wagner has announced that Ralf Fährmann will be his first-choice goalkeeper for the new season.

Fährmann is back in Gelsenkirchen after spending last season on loan at Norwich City and SK Brann and will play at the expense of Markus Schubert, who failed to impress when he was given the chance in the second half of last season.

"The training sessions and pre-season friendlies proved that Ralf has found his form again. Since his return to Gelsenkirchen five month ago, he has continually improved himself, even after the difficult year and lack of playing time he has behind him," Wagner said in an interview posted on Schalke 04's website.

"Over the course of the last few weeks, Ralf has proven that we can count on him 100 percent.

"Our trio of goalkeepers in Ralf Fährmann, Markus Schubert and Michael Langer give their all during their daily sessions with our goalkeeping coach Simon Henzler, and help ensure that there is a high level of competition within our team."

Fährmann has played 234 games for Schalke 04 in the past.
