Schalke 04 would like to tie 19-year-old Matthew Hoppe down to a new deal, head coach Christian Gross revealed ahead of Saturday's game against Bayern München.

Hoppe, who has scored five goals in his first seven Bundesliga appearances, is out of contract in the summer, but Schalke are working on a new deal for him.

"The club management is doing everything it can to ensure that he will continue to play for Schalke in the future," Gross told reporters on Friday.

As for Hoppe's role in the squad following forward veteran Klaas Jan Huntelaar's return to Schalke from Ajax, Gross said:

"It's really great how he is applying himself and giving 100% for Schalke. It wouldn't be a problem for him if Klaas Jan Huntelaar jumps ahead in the pecking order. He can benefit massively from Klaas-Jan and he's determined to keep on developing."
