Leverkusen's disappointing afternoon in Sinsheim was overshadowed by a serious-looking injury to defender Loic Bade, who required lengthy treatment after a clash of heads with Hoffenheim forward Max Moerstedt.
The incident occurred in the build-up to Alexander Prass' 89th-minute goal, and both players were left on the ground after the collision.
While Moerstedt was eventually able to continue, Badé required medical attention before being carried from the pitch on a stretcher.
Speaking to BILD after the match, Leverkusen's Robert Andrich, who witnessed the collision up close, was asked whether his teammate had been responsive on the pitch.
"No, not really," the German international replied.
Andrich described the collision's severity and admitted it was difficult to watch.
"You really had to swallow hard because it was a heavy collision," he explained.
The midfielder also stressed that Bade's well-being was the priority following an afternoon that saw Leverkusen's winning run come to an end.
"First and foremost, we definitely hope that Loic gets better soon," Andrich said.
The injury came during a chaotic finish, with Hoffenheim eventually running out 3-0 winners.
Andrej Kramaric had opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 79th minute before Prass doubled the hosts' advantage ten minutes later.
Moerstedt then added a third in stoppage time, after being involved in the earlier collision.
