Dortmund confirm new coaching role for Schmelzer
Former Borussia Dortmund player Marcel Schmelzer has been appointed as the new assistant coach of the club's under-23 team.
The 36-year-old, who is currently part of U17 coach Marco Lehmann's team of assistants, will move into the new role this summer on a contract that runs until 2026.
"We want to develop not only our players but also our coaches. With his extensive experience in professional football and his commitment to working with young talent, Marcel will be a first-class addition to our U23 coaching staff," said BVB managing director Lars Ricken.
Schmelzer, who made 367 appearances for Borussia Dortmund, said:
“I have known for a long time that I really wanted to take the step into adult football. I'm very happy about this opportunity because our U23 team is an interesting squad with a lot of young talent.”
