Mainz updates: Austrian youth international set to sign, Heidel comments on Sano rumors

Austria's "Kronen Zeitung" reports that Austrian youth international Nikolas Veratschnig is set to join FSV Mainz 05 on a free. Nullfünfter sporting director Christian Heidel has also commented on rumors that the club is considering purchasing Japanese national team midfielder Kaishu Sano.

FSV Mainz 05's search for midfield reinforcements following the departure of Leandro Barreiro may soon yield two signings. Austria's "Kronen Zeitung" reports that Nikolas Veratschnig of Wolfsberger AC is already on the way to the Pfälzer capital in order to complete his medical. The Rheinhessen have apparently seized upon the opportunity to sign the Austrian youth international - who sits on an expiring contract - on a free.

Veratschnig can function as a six, yet also plays as a fullback and winger on the right flank. Rumors that Mainz are looking for someone of a higher and more reliable caliber to serve as Barreiro's direct replacement continue to swirl. Japan's "Honchi" news service and Germany's Kicker Magazine both claim that Mainz are interested in acquiring Japanese national team defensive midfielder Kaishu Sano - once linked with Bremen - for around €4 million.

Kicker Magazine's Michael Ebert contracted FSV sporting CEO Christian Heidel for direct comment on the Sano rumors. The long-time club executive neither confirmed nor denied the reports, yet did drop a strong hint that he and his administrative team may be in negotiations with Sano's club Kashima Antlers. Heidel told Ebert that he and his staff "knew the player" before emphasizing that he had nothing further to add.
