Nagelsmann gives update on Neuer illness, hints at sub role for de Ligt

Ahead of Bayern's Bundesliga opener against Eintracht Frankfurt tomorrow, head coach Julian Nagelsmann gave an update on Manuel Neuer's illness and spoke about Matthijs de Ligt's chances of making the starting eleven.
For the second day in a row, Bayern München captain Manuel Neuer is not in training due to a stomach bug.

Nevertheless, he should be ready to feature when the German champions kick off the 2022/23 Bundesliga season against Eintracht Frankfurt tomorrow.

"It's looking good," Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann told reporters at the pre-match press conference.

"He won't train today, but will travel with the team. He will be part of our meetings tomorrow, and is feeling a lot better.

"If things continue to improve, as I assume they will, then he can play tomorrow."

Later in the press conference, Nagelsmann talked about Matthijs de Ligt's chances of starting tomorrow and seemed to indicate that a starting place is unlikely for the Dutch newcomer.

"Of course, he still needs a bit of time. Sure, I could through him right into the staring line-up, but he wouldn't be at full capacity yet," Nagelsmann said about the defender, who joined Bayern for €67 million from Juventus last month.

"He's a candidate for the starting eleven tomorrow, although there is no compelling reason to make any changes to the back four that did very well last Saturday [in the Supercup against RB Leipzig]. Matthijs is a very smart man, who understands that he has only been here for a few weeks. He is very hardworking and also trains when he has a day off."
