Mats Hummels has been singled out as the best German centre-back by former German international Dietmar Hamann.
Hamann believes Germany coach Joachim Löw made a mistake when he decided to axe the experienced Borussia Dortmund defender from the national team earlier this year.
"He's the best German central defender at the moment. He should never have been excluded from the national team," Hamann wrote in a column for Sky and added:
"[Niklas] Süle, [Jonathan] Tah and [Matthias] Ginter aren't at the level of Hummels when it comes to experience and class. Süle is most likely to reach that level, but the other two still have a long way to go. For me, Mats Hummels still belongs on the pitch when Germany play."
Hummels, 30, has made 70 appearances for 'Die Mannschaft', scoring five goals.
