In one of the most surprising moves of the January transfer window, Max Kruse re-joined his former club VfL Wolfsburg from Union Berlin.

Kicker now reports that Wolfsburg initially targeted Kruse's teammate Taiwo Awoniyi, but without any luck.

Per the report, 'Die Wölfe' already came knocking for Awoniyi last summer, but both then and in January, the Nigerian forward opted to stay at Union Berlin.

Awoniyi has scored 15 goals in 32 games for Union this season.

In addition to Kruse, Wolfsburg ultimately brought in Danish forward Jonas Wind (FC Copenhagen) and American wide man Kevin Paredes (D.C. United) in January.
