Gegenbauer resigns as Hertha president

Just hours after Hertha's relegation play-off triumph against Hamburger SV, Werner Gegenbauer stepped down as the club's president.
Werner Gegenbauer has stepped down as Hertha BSC president, according to multiple reports.

Having served as Hertha president since 2008, the 71-year-old resigned just hours after the club ensured survival in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 victory over Hamburger SV in the relegation play-off second leg.

In addition to Gegenbauer, Hertha chief financial officer Ingo Schiller has resigned, as already confirmed by the club.

Gegenbauer's resignation, regardless of the outcome of the relegation play-off tie, was expected in Berlin because of his strained relationship with investor Lars Windhorst.

"I am clearly against the top of the presidium and his followers," Windhorst recently said.

"I'm banking on the positive effects of a new start, and we also need this new start at the top."
