At the age of 33, Manuel Neuer remains the first-choice goalkeeper for both Bayern München and Germany – but for how long?

Neuer's contract with Bayern München runs until 2021, and he admits that he isn't sure what will happen beyond that.

"I know when it will expire and that something will follow after that. I can't say what and where at the moment," Neuer told Die Welt.

"For me, it's important to feel needed. Because when that's no longer the case and you're made to feel that, it's hard to get up and motivate yourself every day," he added.

Asked if the European Championship in 2020 could be his last tournament with Germany, Neuer responded:

"At some point, it will end. I know that. But I can't say that at the moment. I have the feeling that I'm extremely needed in the national team and that everyone is happy that I'm here."

FC Barcelona's Marc-André ter Stegen is pushing to take over the role as Germany's first-choice keeper and has said that openly on numerous occasions, but Neuer has held on to the number one spot until now.
