The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed that Fritz Keller has stepped down as president with immediate effect.

Keller offered his resignation last week after facing criticism for a controversial comment directed at his vice president, Rainer Koch. The DFB president compared Koch to Roland Freisler, a notorious Nazi judge.

"As announced, I am making my office as president available for a profound and necessary new start in the interests of the German Football Association," said Keller in a statement.

"In doing so, I am taking personal responsibility for my gaffe at the Executive Committee meeting on April 23, 2021, which is to remain the sad low point of the DFB's desolate leadership situation."
