Eberl: 'It was one of the toughest decisions of my career'

Gladbach boss Max Eberl says parting company with Dieter Hecking is one of the hardest decisions he has made in his career.
Earlier today, Borussia Mönchengladbach announced that Dieter Hecking will leave his position as the club's head coach at the end of the season.

Speaking at a press conference today, Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl made it clear that it was an extremely difficult decision to make.

"It was one of the toughest decisions of my managerial career to stop working with Dieter Hecking from the summer. I've made this decision as a sporting director. The decision is of a strategic nature and has nothing to do with the actual situation," Eberl told reporters with a reference to Gladbach's recent poor form.

"I informed Dieter of my decision yesterday in a personal conversation. Dieter is a great person. We will do our utmost to achieve something big together in the remaining games," Eberl added.

Hecking, whose contract was set to run until 2020, admitted he's disappointed that he will not be able to continue his work with the team.

"I'm obviously very disappointed. But if a sporting director like Max believes it's better for the club to work with another coach in the future, that's the way it is. That's his right, and I accept that, of course," Hecking said and added:

"I have a very close relationship to the team, and I'm coach here with heart and soul. We will give everything together so we can celebrate great success at the end of the season."

Hecking was hired as Gladbach coach in December 2016.
