Markus Schubert and Ralf Fährmann to battle for the number one role at Schalke 04

Markus Schubert and Ralf Fährmann will be fighting for the role as Schalke 04's first-choice goalkeeper for the 2020/21 season, says head of sport Jochen Schneider
Schalke 04 were considering bringing in a new goalkeeper ahead of the 2020/21 season, but can't afford one, according to Sport Bild.

Therefore, with Alexander Nübel leaving to join Bayern München in the summer, Markus Schubert is set to compete for the number one role with Ralf Fährmann, who will be returning from loan.

"We are planning with Markus Schubert and Ralf Fährmann, because they are two outstanding Bundesliga goalkeepers. In addition, we still have Michael Langer, who occupies an enormously important position in our team," Schalke 04 head of sport Jochen Schneider told Sport Bild.

"Of course they will enter an open competition. This is a basic part of competitive sport. Ralf Fährmann has the advantage of bring more experienced while Markus Schubert has the advantage of having played more as far as this season is concerned," he added.

As for the remainder of this season, Schalke 04 coach David Wagner has said plans to let Markus Schubert stay in goal ahead of Alexander Nübel.
