DFB boss criticizes leak of Bayern-Woltemade agreement before U21 Euros final loss

DFB boss Andreas Rettig says the leak of Bayern’s interest in Nick Woltemade just before Germany’s U21 Euros final was poorly timed.

German Football Association managing director  Andreas Rettig has expressed frustration that Bayern Munich’s agreement with Nick Woltemade was leaked just days before the Stuttgart forward was set to feature for Germany in the U21 European Championship final against England.

As a result of the reports, Woltemade faced numerous questions about Bayern’s interest on the eve of the game, creating an unwanted distraction from the match from the DFB’s perspective.

“I would have wished that FC Bayern’s transfer policy didn’t become public precisely when Nick and the DFB had a major final coming up. I find the timing suboptimal,” said Rettig at the “chiotec” congress in Aachen.

“We would have preferred it differently,” the DFB boss emphasized.

However, Rettig also made it clear that the speculation surrounding Woltemade’s future was not “the reason for the defeat.”

Germany lost the final 3-2.
