Honest verdict from Baumgart, frustration for Thorup

Union Berlin came from behind to end the season with a 2-1 win over Augsburg, but their coach doesn’t think they deserved the points.

For the first time in their Bundesliga history, Union Berlin avoided defeat in five successive away games as Andrej Ilić scored a late brace in Augsburg.

“If we’re being honest, we saw a game where the better team didn’t win,” said Steffen Baumgart with complete honesty after the game. “Augsburg had more of the play for long stretches. They also created better chances, which my team defended well.”

Augsburg’s Jess Thorup also thinks his team slipped the lead unnecessarily. “We shouldn’t have lost after going 1–0 up. That’s frustrating,” reflected Thorup in his post-match interview. “It isn’t how we imagined our last home game. Of course, we wanted to go into the summer break with a win.

“A big thank you goes to our fans, who supported us right to the final whistle. Right now, we’re very disappointed with the result. The final impression always stays in your mind for a long time.”
