Schalke 04 have made a late move to sign Basel defender Silvan Widmer, according to Fussballtransfers.

'The Royal Blues' are hoping to sign a right-back before the transfer deadline and have switched their attention to Widmer after realizing that Frankfurt's Danny da Costa is too expensive, as per the report.

After Sebastian Rudy played at right-back in Schalke's first two games under David Wagner, Alessandro Schöpf started at the position in Manuel Baum's first game in charge against RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Widmer, 27, is under contract with Basel until 2022. The Swiss international has made a total of 97 appearances for the club, racking up nine goals and 15 assists.

According to Sky, Schalke are interested in 20-year-old RB Salzburg right-back Kilian Ludewig.
