Back in November 2023, FSV Mainz 05 decided to terminate the contract of Anwar El Ghazi after the player made pro-Palestinian statements on social media, prompting the player to file a lawsuit.

The Mainz labour court has now ruled that the termination of El Ghazi's contract without notice was invalid.

As a result, Mainz must now pay the player €1.7 million in wages and bonuses and reinstate him as a licensed player.

El Ghazi's contract with Mainz was due to expire on 30 June this year, but was automatically extended by one year after the club avoided relegation.

The 29-year-old made just three appearances for the club after joining on a free transfer in September 2023.
