The Ghana national team, known as the 'Black Stars', announced earlier this week that 46-year-old Borussia Dortmund talent coach and former Bundesliga player Otto Atto has been appointed interim coach.

Addo's first games in charge will be a two-legged play-off for the qualification to the 2022 FIFA world cup play-off against Nigeria. The first leg will take place in Cape Coast on March 24, with the return leg coming three days later in Abuja, Nigeria.

The winner of the two-legged play-off will qualify for the final round in Qatar from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18.

The appointment represents a strong reaction by the GFA following the catastrophic first-round elimination of the club at the African cup of nations in January.

Initial reports had suggested that the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder, who won the title with 'Die Schwarzgelben' in 2002, would be working alongside Ghana U23 coach former BVB striker Ibrahim Tanko.

Instead, the nation's football federation has opted for a 'technical restructure' and chosen former Brighton Hove and Albion and Norwich City coach Chris Hughton, Aston Villa U23 coach, former Netherlands international George Boateng and former Nordsjælland coach Mas Dramani to head up a four-man team to guide the side's fortunes.

Addo, who also played for Mainz 05, Hannover 96, and HSV in the German league, played 80 games for BVB, scoring 11 goals and winning 15 caps for Ghana in the process.

Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper in Germany reports that BVB has 'agreed to support' Addo's commitment to getting his country to the FIFA World cup for what, if achieved, will be the first qualification since 2014.
