Bayer Leverkusen have released a short statement from Florian Wirtz after the midfielder tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's 0-1 defeat against FC Köln.

"Thank you for all the recovery wishes, messages and calls that have reached me in the last few hours," said Wirtz.

"It is good to know and gives me strength that so many people are thinking of me," added the youngster.

Having racked up 10 goals and 14 assists in 31 games for Leverkusen this season, Wirtz is now expected to be out for at least six months.
