Dortmund boss: 'It's very surprising how far we are now'

Borussia Dortmund boss Hans-Joachim Watzke admits he has been surprised by how well the team have been doing this season.
Almost halfway into the 2018/19 season, Borussia Dortmund are seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, through to the round of 16 of the DFB Pokal and certain to advance from their Champions League group.

It's safe to say that 'die Schwarzgelben' have had an excellent season so far - and, according to BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, head coach Lucien Favre and his squad have exceeded all expectations.

"Our last season wasn't the best. Even though it was a criticizable season, we ended up finishing fourth, and many would dream of that," Watzke told Sport1 and went on:

"It's very surprising how far we are now. We actually believed that we needed a lot more time to build a new foundation that we would perhaps be able to refine in the next summer transfer period."

"We have an excellent coach and a good team. Now, the team need to stay focused," the Dortmund boss said.

In their next game, Borussia Dortmund will be up against Monaco in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
